Tom Gibbs

Tom Gibbs is a painter, specialising in portraits.
He held his first solo exhibition in the city of Adelaide at age 17, which launched him into a full time career with regular commissions from Adelaide, Brisbane and Melbourne. Tom found a greater emotional connection with his work during a year of volunteer work with the Salvation Army, meeting Melbourne’s most marginalized and vulnerable at their point of need. Now at 22, Tom Gibbs resides in Melbourne where he is completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting) at the Victorian College of the Arts.
Tom’s artworks are shadowed by the conviction that humanity is not an excuse, but rather humanity is something for which to aspire. That is, to be fully human is to fully participate in God, one’s self, community, and nature.
Tom’s elective will provide a space to engage with painting in this holistic context. For Tom, most inspiration comes from life outside painting, so this elective will aim to cross-pollinate with other disciplines. He will also explore technique and concept in painting, but he will encourage you to banish these rules if they become an obstacle to your heart’s authentic expression.
